What is the Correct Kreg Screw Length

What size Kreg pocket hole screws do you need for your project?

There is a wide variety of wood screws out there, but I often use Kreg pocket hole screws. Pocket hole joinery is a simple method for the everyday diy-er to be able to start woodworking – it doesn’t require many fancy tools or equipment and is easy to learn.

What is the Correct Screw Length

Since you’re here, I assume you already have a Kreg pocket hole jig or are at least considering purchasing one.

There are plenty of options depending on how much you want to invest, but I highly recommend the Kreg Jig K4 System. It comes with everything you need to get started and is reasonably priced. However, if you want to go a little cheaper, check out the Kreg MKJKIT Mini Kreg Jig Kit. I started with the Mini Kit – it gets the job done just fine, but the K4 system is a little nicer to work with. Either way, you’ll be able to build and that’s the important part!

Once you have that, next on the list is screws.

And here we are!

Use these charts from Kregtool as a quick reference to size your screws:

In the case of joining different sized boards, select a screw length for the smallest board dimension to prevent splitting or exposed screws.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

If joining 1x6 too a 2x4 what is proper length screws too use?

Usually the rule of thumb is to use the settings for the thinnest material when joining boards of different thicknesses. So you'll want to use the 1 1/4" screws.
