This entryway shelf was one of my favorite scrap wood projects that I completed during this series. It’s quick, easy, and useful – a practical way to organize your keys and also add some decoration.
Tools & Supplies:
- Saw
- Wood Glue
- 1 1/4″ Screws
- Key Hooks
Lumber:
- 10″ of 1×6
- 3″ of 1 x 2
Step 1.
Cut your spare lumber to length.
Position the small 1 x 2 shelf 1″ from the end of the 1 x 6 board and 1/2″ from the bottom. Mark the position of the shelf piece and pre-drill two holes from the back of the 1 x 6 board. Once you’ve pre-drilled the holes, attach the 1 x 2 shelf with wood glue and 1 1/4″ screws. Place screws from the back of the 1 x 6 so you won’t see them in the front.
** Tip: pre-drilling ensures the wood will not split when you add the screws.
Step 2.
Pre-drill holes for the key hooks spaced at 1″ and then add the key hooks. You can find cup key hooks at any hardware store, Walmart, or on Amazon.
Step 3.
Sand and finish as desired. I used Minwax Special Walnut and sealed it with Spray-On Polyurethane to protect the wood.
To finish it off, I added a small bud vase from Hobby Lobby, a sprig of eucalyptus, and my keys!
Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

How did you hang out in the wall? What type of hardware did you use?

Yes, I just used some d-hooks on the back. You can use any kind of hanging hardware though!

Hi! This is just beautiful! How did you mount it to the wall? Photo hanging brackets of some kind?
Thank you! Aurora

Thank you! I just attached d-ring picture hanging clips to the back and hung it on those since it wasn't holding much weight. You could also use some small z-clips if you want it to hold more weight.
